Can I use Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) as a birth control method?

You should not use Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) as a standard form of birth control. It is only helpful as an emergency contraceptive, and you should take necessary precautions to protect yourself from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

How to take Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) ?

Take Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) as directed by your doctor, and follow your prescription label exactly.  

The first dose of Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) should be taken as quickly as possible after having unprotected sex, and no later than 72 hours. The second dose is taken 12 hours after the first dose. This timing is very important for this medication to be as effective as possible.

Call your doctor or health care provider immediately if you vomit within the first hour after taking the first or second doses of Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel).  Do not take a further dose without talking to your doctor. You should get an examination by your doctor or healthcare provider within the first 3 weeks following your ingestion of this medication. The doctor should confirm that you are not pregnant and have no harmful side effects.

If your period is more than 1 week late, you may be pregnant. Take a pregnancy test and get in touch with your doctor if you are pregnant. Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) cannot terminate a pregnancy, only prevent one.

Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you develope an allergic reaction to Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel). This includes:

• Hives
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

Call your doctor at once if you have severe pain in your lower stomach or side. This could be a sign of a tubal pregnancy (a pregnancy that implants in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus). A tubal pregnancy is a medical emergency. Less serious Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) side effects may include:

• Nausea, diarrhea or stomach pain
• Breast pain or tenderness
• Dizziness
• Feeling tired
• Changes in your menstrual periods
• Headache.

Precautions before/while taking Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel)

Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) is not intended as a routine form of birth control and should not be used in this manner. Talk with your doctor about the many forms of birth control available. Do not use Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) if you are already pregnant. Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) will not terminate a pregnancy that has already begun (if a fertilized egg has attached itself to the uterus).
Before using Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel), notify your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have diabetes. You may not be able to use Plan B, or you may need special tests during treatment.
Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel) to anyone younger than 17 years old. Contact a doctor for medical advice.

Drug Interactions

Before using Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel), notify your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:

• Brifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane);
• A barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal),
• Phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton)
• Seizure medication, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) or carbamazepine (Tegretol)

This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can affect Generic Plan-B (Levonorgestrel). Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medication you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
